Literacy is an indispensable means for effective social and economic participation, contributing to human development and poverty reduction. Today India presents a deeply contrasting picture. The literacy levels in various states in India vary from 33% to 94%; female literacy is significantly lower.
In Rajasthan, the Mewat area in Alwar district is backward. Worst affected in Mewat is the Meo community, the original inhabitants of the area. Here the literacy rate of Meo girls of more than 15 years of age is 8%.
In Uttar Pradesh, 31% of all the girls in the age group of 6-14 are still out of school. The disparity is more acute in the enrolment of girls from schedule castes and minorities.
